On May 18, 2010, a programmer named Laszlo Hanyecz from Florida announced on the Bitcointalk.org forum that he planned to buy pizzas with 10,000 bitcoins, preferably two large ones. On May 22, Laszlo showed off the transaction, saying that he had made the deal with a guy named Jercos and bought two Papa John’s pizza coupons with 10,000 bitcoins. Jercos, who had acquired the 10,000 bitcoins, said that he had sold them for $400 the next year, a tenfold return on investment.
The purchase of pizzas with bitcoins marks the first real-world interaction of Bitcoin and demonstrates its potential as a medium of exchange. The crypto industry designated May 22 as Pizza Day to commemorate this special moment, and we are about to celebrate the 13th Pizza Day on May 22 this year.
